Artist Statement
Unifying the blue, monochromatic planes of my work are pane-less windows and openings in structures that look out to a sky punctuated with a full moon. This motif was born from my lifelong experiences of being bewildered and astonished by the moon when gazing out of my window at night. Since childhood, there has been this indescribable euphoria I get when I watch as the sun sets, the moon illuminates a darkened atmosphere and the world calms—it’s just me and the quiet. This is an experience that has become deeply rooted in my embodiment, and with that, I create paintings of inhabitable spaces that aim to manifest meaningful experiences for others as well. To do this, I have developed a visual language made up of simple, geometric shapes inspired by building façades I come across in everyday life, and limited colours palettes. Ironically, using restricted/reduced visual elements has granted me the freedom to experiment and play with how I construct the spaces in my paintings.
As my presentation of this concept continues to evolve, I have considered the material qualities of my work and refined the technical aspects of my practice. The result is a regimented process that has become sacred to me and my art;
Starting on a carefully prepared surface, I build up blocks of paint that gradually pull focus to the centre of the canvas.
I work quickly but meticulously.
Without overthought, I carve out shapes determined by the placement of my masking tape, and with broad strokes of a brush, I layer an assortment of blues onto the picture plane.
With a reliance on intuition, my process has become meditative in a way that aptly reflects my motif, its origins, and the intentions of my work.
